Legalise Cannabis Parties have formed or are in the process of forming in every state and territory of Australia. The first state party, Legalise Cannabis Queensland (LCQ), was formed ahead of their 2020 election where twenty-three candidates garnered up to 5.5% of the First Preference Vote.
Legalise Cannabis Western Australia (LCWA) was next, registered in time to contest the March 2021 election, attaining two Upper House seats. Following was Legalise Cannabis Victoria (LCVic), in November 2022. They also won two Upper House seats. The most recent win was by Legalise Cannabis New South Wales (LCNSW), in 2023, securing yet another state Upper House seat.
In 2024, both the Northern Territory and Queensland held state elections. LCQ improved their overall vote, the average going up from 3.7% in 2020 to 4.96% of the First Preference Vote. The final percentages showed an outstanding twenty-three of twenty-nine candidates achieved above 4.00% of First Preference Votes (earning electoral funding).
LCWA went to the polls in March 2025 and achieved an average 4.1% per candidate First Preference Vote. Legalise Cannabis South Australia (LCSA) had a resounding result in their state election in March 2026 with nineteen candidates contesting both Lower and Upper House seats, falling just short of reaching quota in the race for the Upper House!
LCVic will return to the polls in November 2026, but with electoral law changes it will be much harder to retain the seats won in 2022. LCNSW will poll again in 2027. There is a Federal Election due before mid-2028 and both Northern and Australian Capital Territories, alongside LCQ, will poll in late 2028, followed by Tasmania in 2029 and LCWA in 2030.
Legalise Cannabis parties are working toward Australia-wide representation and would appreciate you joining the grassroots campaign, as every state/territory will have a Legalise Cannabis Party.
