Email Your State MP

Drug Policy in Queensland, is it Being Guided By Evidence and Public Health Outcomes?

Writing a compelling email to your elected representative is one of the most effective ways to advocate for drug law reform.

For example, in Victoria, coordinated letter-writing campaigns by supporters of sensible drug policy have helped keep reform on the political agenda. Queenslanders can take the same approach.

A short, respectful letter asking your MP about the evidence behind recent policy changes can help bring transparency and accountability to the discussion.

To The Honourable [MPs Name] MP,

Re: Request for evidence regarding changes to drug diversion laws in Queensland

I am writing as a constituent regarding recent changes to Queensland’s drug diversion laws.

The decision to reduce diversion opportunities from three to one raises serious questions about whether drug policy in Queensland is being guided by evidence and public health outcomes.

Diversion programs were introduced to direct people towards health support and treatment rather than pushing them into the criminal justice system.

I would appreciate clarification on the following points:

  1. What evidence or data supports the decision to reduce diversion opportunities from three to one?

  2. When will the Government release the full Review and Recommendations that informed this policy change?

  3. When will the Government release the Findings and Recommendations from the Queensland Review into drug-driving laws, including the consultation on medicinal cannabis and driving?

Transparency is essential for good policy making. Queenslanders deserve to see the evidence used to justify significant changes to drug policy.

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards
