INGRID WEBER has lived in Queensland since the late 1970s. She has a background in the business world, having owned a building business with her husband and owned and managed her own shop. Currently, she is a full-time carer for her disabled son, struck down with extremely aggressive seizures at a very young age, so severe they result in broken bones and status epilepticus.

During her research for alternative natural therapies to treat her own medical condition, the topic of cannabis treating seizures kept popping up. Ingrid eventually contacted an Australian who was working with children and having great success with THCa and since then has seen some very convincing evidence, cannabis stops seizures in their tracks.

In 2014 when the call for legalising cannabis for medical use began in earnest, Ingrid stepped up her activism and participated in the Medical Cannabis for the Sick and Dying March through the streets of Brisbane with many others families with children affected by similar problems to her son.

Ingrid has since appeared in several television news stories and radio interviews, attended rallies in Queensland and Canberra and regularly attends MedCan Workshops and MardiGrass in Nimbin. She has also been a member of the Medical Cannabis Users Association of Australia for several years.

When medical cannabis became ‘legal’ in 2016, Ingrid rejoiced like so many in the community. But this was short-lived because the barriers put in place by the Federal government are insurmountable. She would like to try legal cannabis products for her son and herself -– but has found the cost to be prohibitive.

If Ingrid could legally grow her own cannabis, she and her son would both have a better quality of life and the cost of their medicine would not put pressure on the public purse. If elected Ingrid will ensure the Government addresses the need for a Compassionate Access Scheme as suggested in the recommendations from the Barriers to Medical Cannabis Inquiry (2020).

Cannabis prohibition results in loss of respect for police by the community. People need to feel safe and not fear law enforcement will destroy their homes, livelihoods and family relationships for growing a plant. Filling the courts with these people is a ridiculous waste of scarce resources, which would cease to be a problem if cannabis was legal.

Ingrid is also concerned about the homelessness and hopelessness that affects our young people. There needs to be more funding for public and specialist disability housing and more emphasis on helping the community. By bringing programs into schools that teach kids life-skills, rather than teaching them things they will never use in real life, they will be much better served.

If you want to see a better quality of life and a better future for Queenslanders, use your vote wisely, Vote 1, Ingrid Weber for Toowoomba South on 26 October!
