IAN ZUNKER, a Bundaberg local and current Vice President of the LCQ Party, represented the Party in 2020 and garnered 5.5% of the first preference vote. An excellent result in the Party's first outing! Ian is a qualified electrician who grew up in the sugar cane and small cropping fields around Bundaberg. Being from a strong farming heritage, one would have expected him to take on the family farm, but fate intervened and his life took a different route.

In 2005 he was involved in a motorcycle accident that left him living with chronic pain. He was more recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and discovered he was living with the disease, unknowingly, all his life. Ian refused to take opioids because he felt the side effects were worse than the pain and after 15 years he considered medicinal cannabis. He wanted to see what cannabis could do not only for his chronic pain, but to get receptors in his brain working more efficiently to relieve some of the symptoms of his MS.

At the start of 2020, Ian began his health journey, a positive life transformation that the regular health system could not provide. From living with crippling chronic pain and debilitating MS, to instantly standing tall and free of pain, with noticeable improvement in cognitive function, plus a whole range of other health issues taken care of.

Ian decided to join LCQ and nominate as a candidate because he wants others who can benefit from cannabis to be able to afford a better quality of life. Four years on from the miracle moment when Ian’s journey started, he is on the same dosage of both THC and CBD oils for his conditions and staunchly believes cannabis is the magic bullet for health and wellbeing that everyone is chasing.

Ian would like to see home grow rights for patients and their carers, an amnesty on patient arrests and patients should be exempt from loss of licence at random roadside drug testing. He believes that loss of autonomy for a medicine that has made you better is mindless and insane. The current system is turning too many generally law abiding citizens into criminals – which can ultimately destroy lives. This has to stop!

Research has also lead Ian to see a place for energy efficient hempcrete housing to be part of the state energy conversation, as no one is talking of lowering power consumption.
